Fort Wayne International Airport Completes Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project

Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) has completed construction on its Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project. The project, which broke ground on April 6, 2020, included milling and replacing existing asphalt, while also adding additional improvements to the existing lots to welcome passengers to the airport.

While the Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project was initially slated to take place over a number of phases throughout the summer, FWA was able to expedite the project in a single phase due to COVID-19 and its impact on passenger traffic. This project increased the capacity of FWA’s Long Term and Short Term parking lots were based off of increased passenger traffic prior to COVID-19. Van-accessible handicap parking spaces were added to both the Long Term and Short Term lots, and the Short Term lot was modified to better help the flow of traffic.

FWA also added Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations for passengers with electric vehicles. The five charging stations are located in Short Term parking to the left of the entrance. Passengers wanting to charge their vehicles will be able to do so FREE of charge, however standard parking lot fees still apply. These charging stations are just one of the ways the airport is supporting sustainability efforts in the community. The airport is also installing additional canopies in the car rental lot. Then new and existing canopies will then be outfitted with solar panels.

“While the COVID-19 Pandemic has brought a number of challenges to the airport, we have taken this time to see the positive and use it as an opportunity to expedite our Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project. By completing this project now, passengers will not experience any disruptions when they return to travel,” said Scott Hinderman, Executive Director of Airports. “With this project, we have been able to create a better parking experience for our passengers and look forward to seeing the lots full when our community is ready to travel again.”

The Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project is a part of Project Gateway – FWA’s airport expansion and improvement project which includes the Parking Lot Rehabilitation Project, East and West Terminal Apron Improvement Project, and the FWA Terminal Building Expansion.
