Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Opportunity This Saturday

Residents can dispose of expired or unwanted household hazardous waste products safely at the next Tox-Away Day on Saturday, May 4 through a partnership between the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County. The event also coincides with the annual Great American Cleanup.

To offer more Tox-Away Days to residents, the City of Fort Wayne’s Solid Waste Department is funding the waste disposal and supplying two, 40-yard containers to open the Allen County Department of Environmental Management’s (ACDEM), Household Hazardous Waste Facility on six Saturdays this year. While residents will still pay a fee to dispose of the items, the additional days offer more opportunities and flexibility for residents.

Residents can take items to the Allen County facility at 2260 Carroll Rd. The only entrance to the facility is from Fort Recovery Road via Lima Road. Items will be accepted from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

Typical items for disposal include:
*Automotive products
*Batteries
*Fertilizers
*Fire extinguishers
*Fluorescent light bulbs
*Herbicides
*Household cleaners
*Mercury
*Paint
*Pesticides
*Pool chemicals
*Propane tanks

ACDEM wants residents to consider the following options before taking household hazardous waste to Tox-Away Days: *Reduce waste by buying only what you need
*Purchase less toxic options
*Ask family, friends, and neighbors if they need it

Future Tox-Away Saturdays will be June 1, August 3, September 7 and October 12.
