TinCaps Game Notes: June 5 vs. Dayton (Game 57)

LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps evened the series with the Dayton Dragons at a game apiece with a 4-1 victory. After a 69-minute rain delay, Dayton scored in the top of the first and held a 1-0 lead until the sixth inning, when the TinCaps plated four runs. Austin Allen clubbed a two-run home run to right field to push Fort Wayne ahead 2-1, and the TinCaps didn’t look back. Austin Smith, the Padres’ second-round pick in 2015,picked up his first professional win with five shutout innings of one-hit ball.

THE ROAD AHEAD: Following the conclusion of the six-game homestand, Fort Wayne embarks on a six-game road trip to Bowling Green then Dayton, beginning Tuesday. With 14 games remaining in the Midwest League’s first half, the TinCaps sit 3.5 games behind West Michigan and South Bend, who are tied for first in the division.

PACKED PARKVIEW FIELD: The TinCaps have drawn 31,260 fans through the first 5 games of this homestand. Fort Wayne is averaging 5,526 fans over 25 openings at Parkview Field this year. Of the 120 Minor League teams currently in action (40 more start their seasons later in June), the TinCaps currently rank 19th in average attendance. Fort Wayne has outdrawn 15 of 30 Triple-A clubs and 28 of 30 Double-A teams. Dayton is the only Single-A franchise ahead of FW.

BRINGING PEÑA TO OPPONENTS: Jhonatan Peña continued his recent hot streak with a pair of hits Saturday. Since May 21, the 22-year-old has raised his batting average 80 points. Over the last 11 games, Peña is 18-for-43 (.419) with 1 HR, 3 2B, 1 3B, and 11 RBI. He’s tied for second for the most RBIs in the Midwest League during this time after having a total of 3 RBI in his first 27 games of the season. Peña has spent most of the year in the bottom third of the order, but batted fifth Thursday night and is slotted sixth again this afternoon.

GETT-ING IT DONE: CF Michael Gettys has been one of the best players in the MWL this year. He leads the league in 4 categories:
