On August 28, 2015, The Courtyard was honored by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) and Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann with an Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing in the category of Special Needs Housing. The Courtyard provides a supportive service housing environment which fosters independence to help break the cycle of homelessness often experienced by individuals aging out of the foster care program, many of who have special needs.
SCAN, Inc. (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect), Biggs Property Management, and SAFY (Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth) are committed to working with the tenants to provide a supportive environment with integrated human services, vocational and employment opportunities, accessible social services and tenant-led groups. The goal is to build community and involve tenants in the operation of The Courtyard. Through these efforts, those invested in the facility support the dignity, independence and self-sufficiency of tenants, and respect the tenants’ rights to involvement in their supportive housing community.
The Courtyard is located at 530 Home Ave, Fort Wayne, IN and opened its doors, welcoming its first residents on July 14, 2014. The Courtyard reached full occupancy July 31, 2015. It was the first housing project in the state of Indiana with a preference for young adults ages 18 to 25, which provides a broad spectrum of supportive services for applicants with a preference for those young adults leaving the foster care system and/or those at risk of becoming homeless.
