The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Northern Indiana is holding its first Shred Day of the year on May 11, Saturday, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. BBB’s Shred Days actively fight identity theft by giving consumers a free place to safely shred their personal documents. This free event will be held at the Afdent Parking Lot at 4041 Parnell Avenue, Fort Wayne, IN.
“The BBB organizes Shred Days to remind consumers that identity theft is a persistent and dangerous problem for everyone,” says Marjorie Stephens, President and CEO of BBB Serving Northern Indiana. “As identity theft schemes become more and more sophisticated, we need to prioritize how we handle our personal information. Shredding outdated personal documents can lower the chances of identity theft,” she adds.
According to BBB’s National Scam Tracker statistics for last year, identity theft cost consumers a median loss of $315 in 2018. Credit card was the top method of payment for losses. Shredding your documents is a way to get rid of sensitive documents while making sure that your personal information isn’t compromised. BBB recommends you shred these documents at Shred Day:
• ATM Receipts
• Bank and Credit Card Statements
• Cancelled Checks
• Credit Card Solicitations
• Old Tax Returns
• Medical Records
• Pay Stubs
• Utility Bills
