Helping Hoosiers Get To The Doctor

Leading health and well-being company Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) is expanding the availability of a transportation benefit for Medicare beneficiaries in Indiana. The benefit, which will provide members with rides to plan-approved locations for non-emergency medical purposes, will be available within more of the company’s Medicare Advantage offerings in 2019.

The benefit will enable members to secure transportation, at no additional cost, to approved locations – including medical and dental appointments, as well as SilverSneakers-affiliated fitness centers – and will be available as a benefit in select 2019 Humana Medicare Advantage Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) and Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans in Indiana. Members will be entitled to an unlimited number of trips per year – of up to 25 miles each way – and will be able to reserve transportation by car or van in advance by calling a toll-free reservation line. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles will be available.

Humana is committed to increasing access to care by addressing barriers to it. About 3.6 million Americans each year miss a doctor’s appointment or delay medical care due to lack of transportation. Missed health care appointments result in an annual total price tag of approximately $150 billion.

“Humana is dedicated to helping Hoosiers achieve better health,” said Larry Costello, Humana regional president of Medicare in Indiana. “We’re pleased to expand the availability of our transportation benefit in Indiana and help make a difference for members of the communities we serve.”

Medicare beneficiaries in Indiana will be able to select a 2019 Humana Medicare Advantage plan during this year’s Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Annual Election Period – or AEP – which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2018. Those who enroll in a Humana Medicare plan during that time will have coverage that takes effect Jan. 1, 2019.

Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans provide people with Medicare with affordable alternatives to original Medicare alone, or original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement plan. With these plans, members can enjoy all the benefits of original Medicare, as well as additional benefits and important financial protections.

Humana offers Medicare Advantage plans in each of Indiana’s 92 counties, and all plans statewide include access to a nurse advice line and Go365TM, a wellness and rewards program designed to motivate and reward members for taking steps to improve and continue their health, like recommended wellness screenings, flu shots, and other healthy activities.
