Fort Wayne Sport Celebrates 90th Anniversary

The Fort Wayne Sport Club, located at 3102 Ardmore Ave in Fort Wayne, is celebrating its 90th Anniversary throughout the year. All the usual events that the Fort Wayne Sport Club will host in 2017 will include the 90th Anniversary theme: “Some play for 90 minutes, we’ve played for 90 years.” in some way or another. The theme casually refers to the length of a soccer game, which is made up of two 45 minute halves, or 90 minutes, and compares it to the age of the Fort Wayne Sport Club. Two very special events coming up in May will concentrate the celebration over two weekends.

Stiftungsfest, which is the Fort Wayne Sport Club’s annual anniversary and founder’s day celebration will take place on May 6th. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the program at 7:00 p.m. All Club members are invited to attend. Special invitations are also being sent to representatives for Indiana Soccer, US Soccer and Unites States Adult Soccer Association, among others.

The festivities will continue at the 90th Anniversary Celebration & Community Festival on May 13th featuring soccer games, family-friendly activities, German-style food and refreshments throughout the day. Youth Soccer recreational play will begin the day, followed by a 1st Team game at 1:00 p.m., an Over-50 team game at 3:30 and another 1st Team game at 5:30 p.m. The annual Das Frühling Turnier will have games being played from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Other activities, including Family Soccer Olympics, soccer ball shooting and obstacle courses, balloon artists, Germanfest-style events, like stein races and polka dancing along with the live music of Will Certain, My Dog Junior and Chris Worth, will take place throughout the day. German-style food, concessions and beverages will be available for purchase. Great draft beers are also available at the Fort Wayne Sport Club bar including Köstritzer, HofBrau, Guinness, Smithwicks, Mad Anthony and Bud Light. Many fine bottled beers are also available at the full-service bar.

The public is invited to celebrate with the Fort Wayne Sport Club during the 90th Anniversary Celebration & Community Festival on May 13th. Admission to the event is free. 2017 marks the 90th anniversary of the Fort Wayne Sport Club, which was founded in 1927 by an active group of soccer players who immigrated to the Fort Wayne area from Germany in the aftermath of World War I. Their immediate goal was ‘the promotion of football (soccer) and German culture’ in the Northeast Indiana area. Today, the Fort Wayne Sport Club is a hub of soccer activity, with programs for recreational and competitive soccer players from age 4-years to 30-and-over. “We are extremely proud of our long history and heritage of encouraging participation in soccer at all levels throughout the area,” stated Dan Kruse, President of Fort Wayne Sport Club. The Fort Wayne Sport Club is a member of Indiana Soccer, which is the state-wide representative of US Youth Soccer, US Adult Soccer and US Soccer. Since 1992, 61 people have been inducted into the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame. Seven of those 61 are Fort Wayne Sport Club members, the most from any club in the state.
