TinCaps Game Notes: Aug. 23 @ Great Lakes (128)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (21-36 – T-7th, 57-70) @ Great Lakes Loons (27-29 – 4th, 56-70)

RHP J.C. Cosme (8-7, 3.39) vs. LHP Caleb Ferguson (1-4, 3.67)

Tuesday, Aug. 23 — Dow Diamond (Midland, Mich.) — First Pitch 7:05 p.m. — Game 128

LAST NIGHT: Fort Wayne lost to Great Lakes, 4-3. Loons second baseman Omar Estevez broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning with a gapper to left field that brought in Darien Tubbs.

HEARTBREAK AGAIN: Last night was the 10th time this season the TinCaps have been walked off on.

SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR: The TinCaps are 22-29 in 1-run games this year. They lead the league in both number of 1-run games played and 1-run losses. No one else has lost more than 26 such games.

OFFENSIVE OFFENSE: The TinCaps scored 3 runs last night for the first time in 10 games. Since plating 13 against Bowling Green on Aug. 13, Fort Wayne has scored a total of 13 runs over its last 10. For part of April, the TinCaps had led all of the Minors in runs scored.

ROAD WOES: The TinCaps have lost 9 consecutive games on the road and are now 24-40 away from Parkview Field this year, including 8-21 in the second half. (Keep in mind, Fort Wayne won its first 3 games of the second half at Bowling Green.) The TinCaps aren’t alone in this regard, though. In the Eastern Division, only South Bend and Bowling Green have winning records on the road, while everyone else is at least 6 games below .500 away from home.

FROM THE FORT TO THE PROS: Loons infielder Zach McKinstry, who graduated from Fort Wayne’s North Side High School in 2013, wasn’t the only Fort Wayne area player drafted in June. Andre Jernigen (Homestead High School) was taken by the Twins out of Xavier. Jernigen is currently with the Elizabethton Twins in the Rookie-level Appalachian League. Also, Colin Brockhouse (Northrop) was selected by the Pirates. He, however, did not sign with Pittsburgh and will return to Ball State. This summer he’s pitched for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League, a collegiate wood-bat league. There was also Evan Miller from LaPorte, Ind., who the Padres drafted out of Fort Wayne. Right now he’s pitching for the Tri-City Dust Devils in the Short Season-A Northwest League. Miller has a 2.08 ERA in 15 relief appearances.
