Fort Wayne TinCaps (4-2, 40-36) vs. Dayton Dragons (1-5, 22-54)
LHP Jerry Keel (4-6, 2.79) vs. RHP Austin Orewiler (1-6, 3.21)
Wednesday, June 29 — Parkview Field — First Pitch 12:05 p.m. — Game 77
LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps overcame a late 3-2 deficit as they tied it in the 8th and walked off in the 9th, 4-3. After there were 2 outs and no one in the 9th against Sarkis Ohanian, Ruddy Giron struck out but reached on a wild pitch 3rd strike. Then after Tyler Moore singled and Kodie Tidwell drew a walk, Peter VanGansen, too,for the win.
KEEPING IT 100: Before today’s game, Clairus Dew, 99, of Fort Wayne, is throwing out a first pitch. Mr. Dew, a World War II veteran who will turn 100 in August, grew up a fan of the Chicago White Sox. He once saw Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig play at Comiskey Park.
NEVER OUT OF IT: Tuesday marked the 7th time this season the TinCaps have won a game when trailing at the end of 7 innings. That’s tied with Lake County for the most in the Midwest League. (Meanwhile, Dayton has now lost 7 games when leading at the end of 7, which is the most in the league.)
WALK IT OFF: The TinCaps now have 3 walk-off wins this year…
– April 26 vs. PEO: Kodie Tidwell 10th-inning single
– June 2 vs. SB: Kyle Overstreet reached on 9th-inning error
– June 28 vs. DAY: Peter Van Gansen 9th-inning walk
Fort Wayne set a franchise record in 2015 with 11 walk-off wins. The TinCaps had 8 walk-off wins in 2014.
THE LAST TIME: The TinCaps won on a walk-off walk was on May 9, 2013 against the Great Lakes Loons. On that night, Brian Adams drew a bases-loaded walk in the 9th not only for the 1-0 win, but also to seal the only 9-inning no-hitter in franchise history, thrown by Max Fried, Matthew Shepherd, Leonel Campos, and Roman Madrid.
BIG RELIEF: A key in last night’s comeback win was the performance of Fort Wayne’s bullpen. On his 22nd birthday, Corey Kimber threw 3 scoreless innings, striking out 4. Lou Distasio followed after that, K-ing the side in order in the 9th. The TinCaps’ bullpen has a 3.05 ERA on the season.
AMONG THE BEST: Austin Allen’s .319 AVG is the 7th highest in the MWL… Ty France’s .400 OBP is 3rd highest… His 44 Walks are tied for 2nd… He’s also been hit a league-high 16 times.
