TinCaps Game Notes: May 22 vs. West Michigan (Game 43)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (22-20) vs. West Michigan Whitecaps (21-18)

RHP J.C. Cosme (3-2, 3.77) vs. RHP Kyle Dowdy (1-0, 0.83)

Sunday, May 22 — Parkview Field — First Pitch 3:05 p.m. — Game 43

LAST NIGHT: TinCaps 3B Carlos Belen smashed a go-ahead, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 deadlock and propel Fort Wayne to a 7-3 win over the Whitecaps on Saturday night at Parkview Field. The TinCaps scored the game’s final four runs to even the four-game series at a game apiece. The game was played before a season-high crowd of 8,137— the 19th-largest crowd in TinCaps history and the second-largest ever in the month of May.

FUNNY AND FAMOUS FIRST PITCHERS: Three days after Indianapolis Colts punter and comedian Pat McAfee tossed out a first pitch at Parkview Field and joined the television broadcast, comedian Steve Hofstetter will do the same. The Senior Comedy Correspondent for Fox Sports, Hofstetter is the host of “Finding Babe Ruth” on Fox Sports 1, “Laughs” on FOX and the “Major League Podcast.” Arthur Wahlberg, who appears on A&E’s The Wahlburgers, will toss a first pitch and join the telecast, as well.

BELEN BASHING: TinCaps 3B Carlos Belen is in the midst of a season-long six-game hitting streak. Over that stretch, he’s hitting .381 (8-for-21) with seven runs scored. The 20-year old from the Dominican Republic has an extra-base hit in each of those six games (three doubles, two triples and a home run). Belen’s home run Saturday traveled 440 feet and left the bat with an exit velocity of 113 MPH, which would make it one of the 10 hardest-hit home runs in Major League Baseball this season.

RALLIES AND RESILIENCY: Fort Wayne has played in a league-high 18 one-run games, while the other 15 Midwest League teams have played in an average of 10.7 one-run games apiece. The TinCaps have also had six games decided by two runs, meaning 57 percent of their games have been one- or two-run affairs. Fort Wayne also has nine come-from-behind wins.

AMONG THE BEST: TinCaps are among the Midwest League leaders in the following categories…

· Batting Average: Austin Allen (.342) — 3rd

· On-Base Percentage: Austin Allen (.426) — 4th

· Games: Michael Gettys (41) — 1st

· Runs: Michael Gettys (25) — T-4th

· Stolen Bases: Michael Gettys (17) — 2nd

LIFE AT HOME: Tonight is the fifth game in the first of three seven-game homestands for the TinCaps at Parkview Field, the longest of the season. In each of the previous three games, the team has reached at least 6,115 in attendance.
