TinCaps Game Notes: May 18 vs. Lansing (Game 39)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (20-18) vs. Lansing Lugnuts (18-16)

LHP Logan Allen (2-2, 2.74) vs. RHP Jon Harris (2-0, 1.45)

Wednesday, May 18 — Parkview Field — First Pitch 11:05 a.m. — Game 39

LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps beat the Lugnuts, 4-3, in the series opener. Brad Zunica drove in all of Fort Wayne’s runs. His big hit was a two-out, bases-clearing double in the sixth that turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead.

ANNIVERSARY: On this day last year, the Padres added then-18-year old shortstop Ruddy Giron to Fort Wayne’s roster. After he hit .168 in the Arizona League in 2014, expectations weren’t high for Giron. But with the TinCaps in last place at 11-23, there was nothing to lose. Sure enough, following a full day of travel from Arizona, Giron went 6-for-6 in his debut at Lake County, becoming the first Fort Wayne player to record a 6-hit game since Rene Lopez had done it in 1993. Sparked by Giron, the TinCaps went 65-38 the rest of the way and finished the season with the Eastern Division’s best record.

OUTFIELD ASSISTS: The TinCaps won Tuesday thanks in part to Rod Boykin’s outfield assist in the seventh, as he threw out Gunnar Heidt, attempting to tie the game, at the plate. It was Boykin’s 4th outfield assist of the season. Michael Gettys leads the team with 7. Fort Wayne has 13 outfield assists as a team.

AMONG THE BEST: TinCaps are among the Midwest League leaders in the following categories…

· Batting Average: Austin Allen (.376) — 2nd

· On-Base Percentage: Austin Allen (.458) — 2nd

· Games: Michael Gettys (37) — T-1st

· Runs: Michael Gettys (24) — T-3rd

· Stolen Bases: Michael Gettys (15) — T-1st

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE: The TinCaps are 11-5 at Parkview Field this season. However, Fort Wayne is tied with Lake County for having played the fewest home games in the Eastern Division. The TinCaps have had to play 6 more games on the road than at home. Coupled with weather woes, Tuesday was Fort Wayne first 9-inning game at home since April 29.

THE OTHER GUYS: The Lugnuts have the following Top 30 Toronto Blue Jays prospects on their active roster…

– No. 4 RHP Jon Harris – No. 25 3B Carl Wise
