The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum is opening its travelling community exhibit entitled The Women Workers of the Auburn Automobile Company in the museum’s Export and Domestic Sales Gallery. It is making its fifth and final stop on a twelve month journey around the community and will be displayed until September 15, 2016.
This exhibit is composed of photographs of women working in the Auburn Automobile Company factories and offices. The museum hopes that some of these women will be identified by relatives, neighbors, and family friends so that their legacy can be preserved. The exhibit is being featured as part of Indiana’s Bicentennial celebration, and is an excellent offering for those in the community curious about the role of women in our state’s history.
Ethan Bowers, Archives Manager of Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum designed the community exhibit said, “Overall, it’s nice to be able to celebrate Hoosier women in an accurate and appropriate manner. I believe many Hoosier’s have the feeling that women were often powerless and not influential in the early twentieth century, which is simply untrue. When you take a closer look at the role of women in the Indiana workforce at companies such as the Auburn Automobile Company, you see that their mere presence wielded influence and altered their role in the community. For something to be historically significant it doesn’t always have to be revolutionary or extraordinary. In fact, it is perhaps the ordinary Hoosiers and their struggles to make a living that we should highlight.”
The Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum – where the world’s finest cars of yesterday live today! The museum is located in the original 1930s national headquarters of the legendary Auburn Automobile Company and is a National Historic Landmark.
