Alzheimer’s Association Walk To End Alzheimer’s Raises Nearly $193,000

Nearly 1,500 residents from Allen and surrounding counties joined the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions on Oct. 3, 2015, at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. Totals are being finalized, but initial numbers indicate that participants raised nearly $193,000 to fund Alzheimer’s care, support and research programs. The event was made possible with the support of statewide presenting sponsors American Senior Communities and Kittle’s Furniture.

“I’m still amazed at how wonderful the Walk to End Alzheimer’s was this past weekend,” said Julie Tutwiler, Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s Coordinator. “It may have been cold and rainy, but we filled Parkview Field and the streets of downtown Fort Wayne with those honoring loved ones lost to this devastating disease, supporting those currently taking the journey through this disease and walking to find a treatment.”

Walk participants had an option of a 1- or 3- mile route, and also had the opportunity to learn more about the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association shared information regarding their role in fighting Alzheimer’s disease and the danger that it poses to so many around the country. Information about how to participate in clinical trials and advocacy opportunities at the state and federal levels were also provided. An emotional tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing the disease helped to bring all of the attendees together.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly increase well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. In Indiana alone, there are more than 110,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Thank you to everyone that came, that donated and to the committee and volunteers,” said Tutwiler. “Keep pushing, and together we can end Alzheimer’s!”

Donations to the Fort Wayne Walk to End Alzheimer’s are still being accepted through the end of this year in order to reach the fundraising goal of $220,000. For more information or to make a donation, please visit alz.org/Indiana or call 800.272.3900.
