TinCaps Game Notes: July 19 at Dayton (Game 92)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (14-9, 46-45) @ Dayton Dragons (11-12, 50-43)

RHP Ernesto Montas (9-5, 3.03) vs. LHP Junior Morillo (2-4, 4.98)

Sunday, July 19, 2015 — Fifth Third Field (Dayton, OH) — First Pitch 2:00 p.m. — Game 92

ABOUT LAST GAME: The TinCaps fell to the Dayton Dragons, 8-2, in Saturday’s rain-shortened game. Fort Wayne had the bases loaded in the top of the eighth when thunder showers passed over Fifth Third Field. After a one-hour and five-minute delay, the game was officially called. Trae Santos, Franmil Reyes and Luis Tejada combined for six hits.

IT’S RAINING, MAN: It was the second time this season Fort Wayne had a game in progress called due to rain. On May 27 at home, the TinCaps led the Great Lakes Loons, 5-2, in the top of the eighth when heavy rain passed through. That game was ruled an official Fort Wayne win after a 90-minute delay.

SANTOS IN A GROOVE: TinCaps first baseman Trae Santos recorded two hits and an RBI on Saturday vs. Dayton. The 22-year-old is hitting .385 over his last eight starts with five runs scored, four doubles, four RBIs and five walks.

TWICE IS NICE: Speaking of doubles, Fort Wayne is second in the league in two-baggers with 165 through 91 games. That’s second only to Lansing (176).

FORMER TINCAPS REACH FOR GOLD: The U.S. defeated Cuba in walk-off fashion on Saturday, 6-5, to advance to the Pan-Am Games gold medal final vs. Canada on Sunday in Toronto. Two former TinCaps led the U.S. to victory in the ninth. With two outs, Travis Jankowski (2012) smoked a single, stole second base, and then scored on Andy Parrino’s (2008, 2009) base hit to right field. The Americans erased a 5-1 seventh-inning deficit to come back and win. Pitcher Zach Eflin (2013) also started Thursday’s game vs. the Dominican Republic and surrendered just one run over five innings.

PITCHING LEADERS: Eflin led the MWL with a 2.76 ERA in 2013. Sunday’s starter Ernesto Montas is trying to top the league as well. Currently the RHP is tied for second in the league with nine wins.
