TinCaps – Gettys and Cordero Go Deep to Open Homestand

The TinCaps blasted six extra-base hits on Thursday – including two solo home runs from Michael Gettys and Franchy Cordero – but fell to the Lansing Lugnuts, 8-5, at Parkview Field.

For the second time this year, Gettys clubbed a home run over the left field wall. Cordero connected on a fastball and flew it over the right-field fence, his first dinger of the season. Eight of the nine Fort Wayne hitters in the lineup reached base safely.

Lansing (17-11) got on the board immediately scoring four runs in the top of the first. J.D. Davis and D.J. Davis hit back-to-back triples to drive in runs. Richard Urena followed with a sacrifice fly that plated the fourth run of the inning.

The visitors made it 5-0 when they added a run in the second inning. Fort Wayne (8-17) answered right back in the bottom half of the frame. Franmil Reyes tripled and Nick Vilter drove him in with a base hit to right field.

Gettys’ home run in the third cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Lugnuts added three runs in the fifth inning. Urena and Danny Jansen smacked back-to-back home runs to make it an 8-2 ballgame.

The TinCaps exploded in the sixth inning for three runs. First, Cordero homered, then Nick Torres and Duanel Jones followed with doubles. Jose Ruiz later drove in a run that inning.

The scoreboard read 8-5 heading into the eighth, but the home team was silenced the rest of the way.

Not to be lost in the shuffle were Seth Lucio and Kyle McGrath’s 4 2/3 combined scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen. Lucio fanned four batters in his 10th appearance of the year.

Taylor Cox (L, 0-3) took the loss, while his counterpart Shane Dawson (W, 3-2) picked up the win.
