FORT WAYNE, Ind.—The Department of Philosophy and Theology in the School of Arts of Sciences at the University of Saint Francis will sponsor a free public lecture at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 in Gunderson Auditorium, Achatz Hall of Science.

Dr. Earl Kumfer, professor of philosophy and theology, will present “Duns Scotus, Architect of the Immaculate Conception.” The lecture will address John Duns Scotus’ central role in shaping Catholic belief in Mary’s freedom from sin. Duns Scotus’ debates and writings occurred at a time of very heated controversy. In 1854, the Church formally proclaimed the doctrine of Mary’s Immaculate Conception.
