Allen County Education Partnership is recruiting volunteers

Project READS is recruiting volunteers for its after-school tutoring program. Volunteers attend a free initial training session, then are matched one-to-one with a kindergarten through third grade student striving to reach grade-level reading goals. Volunteer tutors meet with their student for one hour each week during the school year at one of sixteen sites throughout Allen County. While all sites will welcome new tutors, volunteers are especially needed in the afternoon, 3:45-4:45 P.M., at: Fairfield Elementary School, 2825 Fairfield Avenue, on Mondays; and Harrison Hill Elementary School, 355 Cornell Circle, on Wednesdays.

Volunteers are apprised of their impact on their student’s academic success. Student assessments are conducted at the beginning and conclusion of each program year to gauge progress. Last year 98% of Project READS students showed improvement, with 80% improving by 4 or more reading levels. In addition, 61 students graduated from the program by reading at or above grade level.
