“Explore The Honey Bee” Coming To A Library Near You!
Southwest Honey Co. and the Allen County Public Library have teamed up to bring the k-12 “Explore the Honey Bee” program to 12 of the 14 library branches over the next month. The event at each branch is cost free to attend and lasts about 90 minutes. Children and parents are encouraged to come learn through the various fun and hands-on activities how fascinating pollinators are, how they help us and what we can do to help them.
“We held one event at the ACPL Shawnee Branch last year and the kids and librarians loved it! So this year, we are proud to announce that we will be visiting most of the ACPL branches which will help attendees make a fun and educational connection between pollination, where our food comes from and our environment.” Megan Ryan, Southwest Honey Co. Education Director continued, “For us, pollinators are an important cause and we are so glad that we will be traveling the county sharing our program with students and parents at ACPL branches.”

• Investigate how honey bees work together and communicate to keep their hive strong • Learn about what can be done at home to help honey bees and pollinators • Explore a sealed observation hive with live bees inside (safe for all ages) • Look close up with a digital microscope
• Taste natural honey
• Includes a take-home packet with fun educational activities
Not a beekeeping class. This unique event has been designed to open the minds of our students with an interactive learning experience that connects them with the natural environment and helps them learn how pollinators contribute to where our food comes from. Within the summer of 2016, over 600 people participated in our educational experiences that center around pollinators (honey bees), conservation, and beekeeping. These programs are incredibly important to our ecosystem and shed light on the plight of the honey bees as well as educate the community on the importance of pollinators, beekeeping, and simple day-to-day conservation efforts that will support a healthy future for our world’s honey bees.
Southwest Honey Co. was founded as an initiative to protect and conserve the bee population in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Our beekeeping practices are “bee-safe,” research based and our hives are kept in sustainable areas. Our organization is made up of volunteers and partners who want to help the honey bee population. We have also partnered with local conservation “minded” organizations to study, report and address the issues surrounding the honey bee.
