USF Approved For AWS Foundation Grant

The AWS Foundation has approved a University of Saint Francis request for a $25,000 grant for a pilot project delivering early childhood screenings for developmental and physical delays. USF Assistant Professor Terri Roberts MSN, RN will be directing this project.

The USF-led and coordinated pilot program will provide developmental and medical screenings of Allen County preschool age children. The pilot will focus on childcare centers that currently do not offer such screenings or have not fully utilized available resources for screenings.

The AWS grant will support both the human resources and supplies needed to make this project possible. Roberts will coordinate with childcare sites, other agencies and the USF nursing program. Three courses in the USF nursing program will integrate the pilot program, and instructors will supervise students at these sites. USF faculty and other stakeholders will conduct education and mentoring events for families. The budget also includes interpreters who might be needed at some screening sites.

“This project is a wonderful opportunity for USF students to learn as they give back to the community,” Roberts said. “So many young children and families do not have the chance to go through these important screenings and this funding will now make that possible.”
