TinCaps Game Notes: Aug. 20 vs. Lake County (Game 125)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (20-34 – T7th, 56-68) vs. Lake County Captains (25-28 – 5th, 65-58)

LHP Thomas Dorminy (3-4, 3.46) vs. RHP Trevor Foss (2-1, 3.18)

Saturday, Aug. 20 — Parkview Field — First Pitch 7:05 p.m. — Game 125

LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps put the winning run on base in the bottom of the ninth inning but fell to Lake County, 3-2, in the series opener.

KNOCKING ON THE DOOR: After Friday’s loss, the TinCaps have dropped 28 games by one run, the most in the Midwest League (Quad Cities, Beloit and Kane County are tied for second with 24 one-run losses each). Fort Wayne has played in 50 games decided by one run (40% of its games), tied for the most in the league with Burlington.

DURABLE DORM: In each of his 14 starts with the TinCaps this season, tonight’s starter, Thomas Dorminy, has logged at least 5 innings. Going back to his All-Star season with the TinCaps in 2015, Dorminy has lasted at least 5 innings in 23 consecutive starts for Fort Wayne.

PETEY ON THE PROWL: A few weeks ago, with his average dipping, 2B Peter Van Gansen and TinCaps hitting coach Vinny Lopez watched video of Van Gansen’s swing dating back to his college days at Cal Poly. With a tweaked stance, Van Gansen has recorded a hit in 7 of his last 8 games (with 5 multi-hit efforts, including Friday) and raised his average from .214 to .232 in 11 days.

ROSTER RECORD: The TinCaps have used a franchise-record 56 players this season — breaking the mark of 54 set with the 2004 Fort Wayne squad — after INF Chris Baker debuted as a pinch runner in the bottom of the ninth inning.

ON THIS DAY: In 1919, the longest hitting streak in pro baseball ended at 69 games, as Joe Wilhoit’s remarkable stretch in the Western League came to a close. One week ago, TinCaps catcher Austin Allen’s franchise-best 24-game hitting streak concluded. The next day, Indians prospect Francisco Mejia, who began the season in Lake County and started ahead of Allen in the Midwest League All-Star Game, had his 50-game hitting streak snapped.
