Fort Wayne TinCaps (10-21, 46-55) vs. West Michigan Whitecaps (14-14, 53-42)
RHP Austin Smith (2-5, 4.54) vs. RHP Spenser Watkins (3-0, 3.21)
Wednesday, July 27 — Parkview Field — First Pitch 7:05 p.m. — Game 102
MONDAY NIGHT: Prior to a day off on Tuesday, the TinCaps lost both games of a doubleheader at Beloit on Monday evening. Fort Wayne led 1-0 in both games, but lost 5-1 and 2-1.
ROSTER MOVES: Today the Padres placed RHP Chris Paddack on Fort Wayne’s Disabled List with a right elbow/forearm strain. To fill his spot on the roster, San Diego transferred RHP Emmanuel Ramirez back to Fort Wayne from Short Season-A Tri-City. In 8 starts for the Dust Devils, Ramirez posted a 2.62 ERA, earning recognition as a Northwest League All-Star. Ramirez made 9 relief appearances with the TinCaps earlier this season (5.09 ERA).
ALL-EN THE WAY UP: C Austin Allen ranks 10th in the Midwest League in batting average at .307.
HOMERING FOR HISTORY: 1B Brad Zunica is second in the league with 14 home runs on the season. Of those, 8 have come in 26 second-half starts. The franchise record for home runs in a season is 20 — set by Jake Patterson in 1997. Moreover, Zunica is hitting .306 in July with 21 RBIs in 21 starts.
ANOTHA ONE: Tyler Selesky, a rookie out of Florida Gulf Coast, made his debut on Monday, becoming the 50th player to appear for the TinCaps this season. (The Padres used a total of 45 players in Fort Wayne all of last year.)
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: With UTIL Kodie Tidwell going on the Disabled List Sunday (back/wrist), the TinCaps are down to 6 players who have remained on the active roster since Opening Day:C Austin Allen, RHP J.C. Cosme, RHP Jacob Nix, RHP Austin Smith,OF Jhonatan Peña, and 1B Brad Zunica.
LOOONG GAMES: The last 7 non-doubleheader TinCaps games have gone at least 3 hours and 7 minutes. Their last 11 non-doubleheader games have averaged 3 hours, 22 minutes. This stretch started on July 11 with a 13-inning game at West Michigan.
NOT AS BAD AS IT LOOKS: Yes, the TinCaps currently have the worst second-half record of 16 teams in the MWL, but consider that during this stretch in which they’ve lost 10 of 11, they’ve actually led in all but 3 of these games. Fort Wayne has lost 22 1-run games this year — tied for the most in the league. The TinCaps have also dropped 7 games in extra-innings — again tied for a league high.
