Egg Drop 2016 And Building With Biology

On Sunday, July 10th eggs will fly at Science Central. As an official part of the Three Rivers Festival, the popular science center will host Eggs-travaganza, the annual Egg Drop competition in partnership with Design Collaborative. Additionally, Science Central will showcase "Building with Biology," a look at the field of synthetic biology.

Eggs-travaganza gives participants the opportunity to construct contraptions designed to protect eggs from breaking and then watch as they fall from the roof of Science Central. Those with eggs left still intact will be given awards based on age group. Awards will also go to those with the most creative device, most scientific device, most devastating crash, and most devastating crash to survive.

"This hands-on event is a great opportunity for kids both big and small to learn first-hand the principles of physics, gravity, geometry, engineering and even biology," said Martin S. Fisher, executive director at Science Central. "The best part is they get to have fun while doing it. Who doesn’t love to see something go SPLAT after falling 7 stories?"

To protect kids from a different kind of fall, the Indiana Wayne Lodge Fraternal Order of Police will be on-site to distribute free children’s bicycle helmets courtesy of NueroSpine & Pain Center. Helmets will be available while supplies last.

In addition to the Egg Drop competition, Science Central will offer $1.00 admission to anyone entering the building that day (ages 3 and up).

This special discount admission day will also feature an opportunity to participate in a new event called, "Building With Biology," a program designed to create conversations between scientists and public audiences about the emerging field of synthetic biology.

Synthetic biology uses new techniques combining biology and engineering to make new or modified living things and materials. The field is exploring where biology-based products might provide solutions to a wide diversity of problems in health, energy and the environment.

During the program, the public will have the opportunity to discuss these and other topics with scientists from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Ivy Tech. The program will feature multiple forums for people to interact with area researchers.
