TinCaps Game Notes: June 26 @ Bowling Green (Game 74)

Fort Wayne TinCaps (3-0, 39-34) @ Bowling Green Hot Rods (0-3, 37-35)

RHP Jacob Nix (1-3, 3.50) vs. LHP Genesis Cabrera (6-2, 1.98)

Sunday, June 26 — Bowling Green Ballpark — First Pitch 5:05 p.m. (EST) — Game 74

LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps throttled the Hot Rods, 9-2. Jhonatan Peña gave Fort Wayne a 3-0 lead with a 3-run homer in the top of the second. An unearned run expanded the lead to 4-0 in the third. After the Hot Rods scored once in the fourth and again in the fifth, Kodie Tidwell homered in the seventh to make it 5-2. The TinCaps turned it into a route in the ninth as Marcus Greene Jr. homered, Peter Van Gansen hit an RBI triple, and Austin Allen went deep.

ON-BASE STREAK: After homering on Saturday, Kodie Tidwell has now reached base in 31 consecutive games, dating back to May 13. This is the longest active streak in all of baseball (Single-A, Double-A, Triple-A, and MLB) and the longest such streak in the MWL this year. Tidwell has hit safely in 26 of these games (7 multi-hit efforts), posting a .286 batting average with 20 runs, 8 doubles, a triple, 3 homers, and 12 RBIs. He’s walked 20 times, been hit by a pitch, and stolen 5 bases. Over the stretch his on-base percentage is .393 and he’s slugging .445. At the start of the streak, Tidwell wasn’t a regular in the lineup until injuries gave him an increased role. Across the 31 games, he’s played second, third, short, left, right, and DH-ed.

HOME RUN STREAK: Jhonatan Peña has homered in 3 consecutive games — the first TinCap to do so since Alberth Martinez did it from April 29-May 1, 2013. Peña hit only 1 home run in his first 50 games of the season. Prior to this outburst, hitting coach Vinny Lopez had Peña watch video of Seattle Mariners outfielder Nelson Cruz. Peña has since gone from having a slightly closed stance to a slightly open stance.

HOME RUN DERBY: The TinCaps hit 4 home runs in a game last night for the first time since Aug. 20, 2014.

HOME IS WHERE THE WINS AIN’T: In the 10 meetings between the TinCaps and Hot Rods this season, the home team has yet to win. This is especially odd considering Fort Wayne is 20-11 in home games against opponents other than Bowling Green, and the Hot Rods are 19-12 at home against everyone other than the TinCaps.

CHANCE TO SWEEP: The TinCaps haven’t swept a 4-game series since Aug. 3-6, 2010 at Lansing. Fort Wayne’s last 3-game sweep was here in Bowling Green June 7-9.

AMONG THE BEST: Austin Allen’s .323 average is 4h highest in the MWL… Ty France has been hit by a league-high 15 pitches (3rd most in all of MiLB)… He’s also 3rd in walks (42) and tied for 3rd in OBP (.399)… J.C. Cosme’s 7 Ws are tied for 4th.
