YWCA Northeast Indiana Kicks Off Domestic Violence Awareness Month This Thursday!

The public is invited to join YWCA Northeast Indiana throughout the month of October as we raise awareness about Domestic Violence. We will be kicking off our month of activities this Thursday evening with our annual Flowers on the River event!

The public is invited to join us at YWCA Northeast Indiana as we launch Domestic Violence Awareness Month with our annual Flowers on the River event on Thursday, October 1st at 5pm. Flowers on the River honors those whose lives have been affected by domestic violence. The event will begin at 1610 Spy Run Avenue, YWCA Northeast Indiana’s administrative offices, in Fort Wayne. There will be a short ceremony that will be attended by city and county officials, and a Mayoral Proclamation will be read from Mayor Henry’s office, followed by a walk to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge where flowers will be thrown off of the bridge and into the St. Mary’s River in honor of each person we have served this past year. Since the program began, over 5,000 flowers have been placed on the river, symbolizing the new journeys our clients and their children embark upon.

To RSVP for Flowers on the River please contact Sue Hiatt at YWCA, or 260-424-4908 ext. 254.

We also need the public’s help with our Hope Awards! Every year during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, YWCA Northeast Indiana recognizes those who exhibit excellence in advocacy that reflects our mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. A winner is selected in each of the five categories (Racial Justice, Domestic Violence Prevention and Intervention, Women’s Economic Empowerment, Child Advocacy, and the Junior Hope Award). YWCA Northeast Indiana will surprise the winning nominees with their award during the 2015 YWCA USA Week Without Violence, October 19-23. If you know someone you would like to nominate please visit our website at EJohnson by Monday, October 5th with your nomination! Help us to recognize all the important work members of our community are doing!
